Skåne University Hospital (SUS), Malmö, Sweden

The deployment of a modular operating theatre complex to a hospital in Sweden helped provide extra capacity

The need

During an ongoing building programme, an urgent need was identified for increased operating theatre capacity as the existing theatres did not meet the health and safety requirements for high-risk orthopaedic procedures.

The hospital management team wanted an interim solution that would be quick to implement, but also sufficiently robust so that it could provide an effective operating facility for up to 10 years.

The plan

In Europe, we operate under the Q-bital brand. Our team worked alongside the hospital building team to create a plan for a modular operating theatre complex that could be on-site in just 8 months.

The complex would be integrated and connected to the existing operating theatre department, situated on the third floor of the hospital. Initial pre-fabrication would take place at the Q-bital production facility in the Netherlands, with final construction completed at a ‘pop-up’ building site in the Malmo area.

The solution

Q-bital provided a 324m2 complex that was fully integrated with the pre-existing operating theatre facilities. The complex was constructed with two operating theatres, plus a preparation room. It was built to meet the strictest requirements for high-risk orthopaedic procedures with an Opragon ventilation system to ensure it offered a safe, ultra-clean operating environment.

The operating rooms were equipped with the most advanced surgical lights and pendants. Q-bital also installed a video-routing system and a building management system developed in-house. This proprietary system provides ongoing insight into all functional installations within the complex, meaning that any maintenance issues can be identified and resolved quickly.

The outcome

Q-bital completed the entire project in just 10 months, meeting the strict specification and on budget. The facility will service the hospital for a period of 7—10 years, providing increased capacity, efficiency and safety, 24-hours a day.

The modular building concept offers a fully flexible solution, and the module can be recycled or repurposed when no longer required, thus providing an environmentally friendly, alternative solution.

Our partnership with Avidicare

Avidicare provided the Opragon ventilation system that was tested for <10 CFU/m3 to ensure a safe, ultra-clean environment.
